Hotels.com™ reveals that Singaporeans are travelling closer to home

Data on the Hotel Price Index™ (HPI™) from Hotels.com™ revealed that the rates of Singapore hotels lowered by an average of 4% in 2016 when compared to 2015, providing greater value for both international travelers and Singaporeans looking at weekend break.

With new boutique hotels popping up, travelers and locals can be sure to have a relaxing time being a tourist in their own city.

Across the causeway, Malaysia remains an ever-popular choice for those who want a short break. Malaysian cities make 4 of the top 10 destination choices for Singaporeans. The convenience of travel, its wonderful food and bargain shopping options, possibly along with the decrease in value of the Malaysian Ringgit compared to the Singapore Dollar, make Malaysia a travel destination in demand.

Data shows that Johor and Penang jumped up the ranks this year, with Johor moving up to No. 7 from No. 9 in 2015, and Penang catching up three places to No. 8 from No. 11 in 2015. Besides Malaysia, traveling to neighbouring Indonesia is another popular option for Singaporeans.

Traditionally a very strong business destination, Jakarta is also quickly emerging as a popular leisure destination, moving close to the top ten list of travel spots at 11th place. The new and huge shopping mall Kota Kasablanka might have offered Singaporean shopaholics a compelling reason to visit Indonesia’s capital looking to gain some retail therapy.
